Volvo Pushes Massive OTA Update

This major software push is built on the Android Automotive operating system and aims to standardize the infotainment experience across Volvo's model range. The update ensures that older models, like a 2020 XC40, will have a user interface that is consistent with newer vehicles such as the EX90. The rollout is extensive, covering 85 countries and approximately 33,000 vehicles in Australia alone. A key feature of the new Volvo Car UX is a "contextual bar" that adapts to the driving situation. For instance, it will automatically bring up the exterior camera view at low speeds to aid in maneuvering. The main screen now consolidates frequently used applications like maps, media, and phone, reducing the number of taps required for common actions. Drivers will no longer need to exit Google Maps to change their music, for example. For owners of Volvo's plug-in hybrid models, the update simplifies the process of switching to all-electric driving. The "Pure" electric mode can now be activated with a single tap from the home screen, making it easier to maximize the use of the electric powertrain. This software update also lays the groundwork for future technology integrations. The new system is designed to be ready for Google Gemini, a conversational AI assistant that Volvo plans to introduce later in the spring. In addition to the free user interface upgrade, the update enables some vehicle owners to purchase and install new features. For cars from model years 2021 to 2025 with Google Built-In, Volvo's Pilot Assist system, which combines adaptive cruise control with steering assistance, can be downloaded for a one-time fee of $595.
