Russia Gets First AI-Generated Graffiti
Russia just unveiled the first graffiti created by artificial intelligence, marking a major turning point in street art. The piece is sparking debate about authorship and the future of public art as machine learning meets human creativity. This breakthrough blends technology with grassroots artistic expression in ways never seen before.
The artwork was a collaboration between the street art festival Stenograffia and the Russian tech company Yandex. It is located in Yekaterinburg, Russia, at 9 Popova Street, Building 1, and was created on May 28, 2018. The project aimed to explore the intersection of ancient art, modern technology, and street art. The creative process began with a 4th-century Roman mosaic from a villa in La Olmeda, Spain. A neural network, specially trained by Yandex, was used to analyze the partially destroyed mosaic and generate a restored version, filling in the missing elements through machine learning. This AI-generated image then served as the blueprint for the graffiti. To transfer the complex, digitally restored image onto the building's facade, the Stenograffia team developed a custom wall-printing robot. This robot meticulously spray-painted the neural network's design, translating the digital artwork into a large-scale piece of public art. The use of a robot for the physical creation of the graffiti further blurred the lines between human and machine creativity. The creators of the piece noted the temporal and technological leap represented by the project, stating, "The artist who created this mosaic in the 4th Century AD could not even imagine that in about 17 centuries his work would be restored by an intellect of a completely another level and origin." They positioned the artwork as a message to contemporary artists about the future possibilities for the longevity and evolution of their own creations.
