Apple M5 MacBooks Launch

Apple refreshed MacBook Pro with M5 Pro/Max chips emphasizing AI workloads, Fusion architecture, Wi-Fi 7, and support for up to three displays. Vision Pro 2 with M5 focuses on on-device AI and spatial personas, while some customers got upgraded from M4 Max to M5 orders. Notably missing: AV1 encode support despite the hardware refresh.

The new "Fusion Architecture" in the M5 Pro and M5 Max marks a fundamental shift in Apple's chip design, bonding two separate silicon dies into a single package. This moves away from the previous monolithic (single-die) approach, a strategy aimed at improving manufacturing yields and scalability for increasingly complex chips. The M5 Pro and M5 Max are built on a third-generation 3nm process and feature a new 18-core CPU architecture with six high-performance "super cores" and 12 efficiency-focused "performance cores". This delivers up to 30% faster multithreaded performance over the M4 generation, with the M5 Max supporting up to 128GB of unified memory. A key focus of the M5 is accelerating AI tasks, with Apple claiming over four times the peak AI compute performance compared to the M4 chips. This is achieved in part by integrating a new Neural Accelerator directly into each of the up to 40 GPU cores. The inclusion of Wi-Fi 7, also known as IEEE 802.11be, brings a substantial leap in wireless speeds with a theoretical maximum of 46 Gbps, compared to 9.6 Gbps for Wi-Fi 6. This is enabled by features like wider 320 MHz channels and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which allows simultaneous data transmission across multiple frequency bands for lower latency and improved reliability. While the M5's media engine includes hardware decoding for the efficient AV1 video codec, it notably continues to omit hardware *encoding*. Competitors like Intel and NVIDIA already offer AV1 encode support, a feature anticipated by video professionals for its improved compression over HEVC. Apple first introduced AV1 decode in the M3 chip generation. The complimentary upgrades from M4 Max to M5 Max for recent orders is a deliberate strategy Apple has used before to manage product transitions. By upgrading unshipped orders, the company avoids the costs associated with customer returns and can more quickly clear out inventory of the previous generation hardware. On the Vision Pro 2, the M5 chip's on-device AI capabilities power features like spatial Personas for more immersive FaceTime calls. This allows users' avatars to appear as if they are in the same room, with their position and Spatial Audio reflecting their location relative to shared content like movies or games.
