Intel targets budget AI PCs
- Intel launched its Core Series 3 'Wildcat Lake' line aimed at low‑cost AI‑capable laptops and edge devices. - The chips are positioned to bring AI features, efficiency, and battery life to budget Windows OEMs. - The move pressures Apple at the entry tier by shifting some AI differentiation into cheaper Windows laptops ( ).
Intel on April 16 rolled out its Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” chips for cheaper laptops and edge systems, pushing AI features further down the Windows price ladder. (newsroom.intel.com) The lineup has six consumer chips, from the five-core Core 3 304 to the six-core Core 7 360, and Intel said more than 70 designs from partners will ship in the coming months. Intel named Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI and Samsung among the brands planning systems. (newsroom.intel.com, pcmag.com) Wildcat Lake is built on Intel’s 18A process and uses a two-tile package with up to two performance cores, four low-power efficiency cores, an NPU for AI tasks, and up to two Xe graphics cores. Intel’s launch deck lists up to 40 platform TOPS of AI throughput, with the Core 7 360 and 350 reaching 17 NPU TOPS. (newsroom.intel.com, download.intel.com, tech.yahoo.com) That distinction matters in Microsoft’s Windows lineup because Copilot+ PCs require an NPU rated at 40+ TOPS, not 40 platform TOPS spread across the chip. Microsoft says the 40+ TOPS NPU is the hardware threshold for that class of on-device AI PCs. (microsoft.com, github.com, tech.yahoo.com) Intel is pitching the new parts at schools, small businesses and buyers replacing five-year-old machines rather than shoppers chasing flagship performance. The company said Core Series 3 can deliver up to 47% higher single-thread performance and up to 41% higher multi-thread performance than a five-year-old PC. (newsroom.intel.com) The battery-life pitch is central to that sales push. Intel said a Core 7 350 reference system can run up to 9.6 hours on a Zoom call with AI effects, 12.5 hours in office apps, and 18.5 hours streaming Netflix. (pcmag.com, tech.yahoo.com) Wildcat Lake also borrows some newer connectivity features that used to land first in pricier laptops, including up to two Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and PCI Express 4.0 lanes. Intel’s deck also shows support for LPDDR5x-7467 or DDR5-6400 memory in a single-channel setup. (download.intel.com, pcmag.com) The competitive backdrop is Apple’s cheaper MacBook Air, which Apple refreshed with the M4 chip in March 2025 and cut to a $999 starting price. Intel’s answer is not one flagship notebook but a broad spread of lower-cost Windows designs that can add local AI hardware without moving into premium-tier chips. (apple.com, newsroom.intel.com) Intel introduced its higher-end Core Ultra Series 3 “Panther Lake” family at the January 2026 Consumer Electronics Show, with more than 200 designs aimed at midrange and premium AI PCs. Wildcat Lake extends the same 18A manufacturing story into entry-level machines, where Intel is betting volume matters more than headline benchmarks. (newsroom.intel.com, intc.com, pcmag.com)
