Intel targets budget AI PCs

Intel on April 16 rolled out its Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” chips for cheaper laptops and edge systems, pushing AI features further down the Windows price ladder. (newsroom.intel.com) The lineup has six consumer chips, from the five-core Core 3 304 to the six-core Core 7 360, and Intel said more than 70 designs from partners will ship in the coming months. Intel named Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI and Samsung among the brands planning systems. Intel’s launch deck lists up to 40 platform TOPS of AI throughput, with the Core 7 360 and 350 reaching 17 NPU TOPS. Microsoft says the 40+ TOPS NPU is the hardware threshold for that class of on-device AI PCs. The company said Core Series 3 can deliver up to 47% higher single-thread performance and up to 41% higher multi-thread performance than a five-year-old PC. Intel said a Core 7 350 reference system can run up to 9.6 hours on a Zoom call with AI effects, 12.5 hours in office apps, and 18.5 hours streaming Netflix. Intel’s answer is not one flagship notebook but a broad spread of lower-cost Windows designs that can add local AI hardware without moving into premium-tier chips.
