21Shares Launches Polkadot ETF
The 21Shares Polkadot ETF began trading on Nasdaq, marking another milestone for crypto mainstream adoption. This follows the broader crypto ETF trend that's been opening institutional access to digital assets throughout 2026.
The 21Shares Polkadot ETF, trading under the ticker TDOT on Nasdaq, comes with an expense ratio of 0.30%. This physically-backed fund holds actual DOT tokens, offering investors exposure to Polkadot's price movements without the need to directly own the cryptocurrency. Polkadot itself is a blockchain protocol designed to connect different, previously incompatible blockchains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Its native token, DOT, is used for network governance, allowing holders to have a say in the protocol's future, and for staking to secure the network and validate transactions. The protocol was created by Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum, to enable the transfer of any data or asset type across blockchains, not just tokens. Polkadot features a central "Relay Chain" that provides security and consensus for a network of parallel, user-created blockchains known as "parachains." This launch is part of a larger trend in 2026 that has seen the total assets under management for crypto ETFs in the U.S. reach $146 billion across approximately 140 products. The increasing institutional acceptance is highlighted by the entry of major financial players like Morgan Stanley, which has filed for ETFs tracking Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. 21Shares is a significant issuer in the crypto ETP space, offering a range of single-asset products for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (in partnership with ARK Invest), Ethereum, Solana, and Dogecoin, as well as diversified crypto index funds. Upcoming developments for the Polkadot network include a major tokenomics overhaul in March 2026, which will introduce a hard supply cap and reduce the annual issuance of new DOT tokens. Additionally, Parity Technologies is developing a unified "Polkadot Hub" to simplify user interaction with the ecosystem's features like asset management, staking, and governance.
