Charleston Funds Daniel Island Park Improvements
The city of Charleston has approved an $885,373 contract for significant drainage improvements at Governors Park on Daniel Island. The project is designed to resolve persistent drainage and flooding issues within the park. The goal is to improve the park's overall usability for residents.
The drainage improvement contract was awarded to Carolina Green Corp., a company specializing in athletic field construction and renovation. The total budget for the project is $965,000, funded from the city's General Fund Reserves, with the construction contract accounting for $885,373 of that total. This project will tackle the persistent issue of soggy fields that remain wet for extended periods after rainfall. The planned solution involves installing a new underground system featuring perforated HDPE pipes. These pipes will be spaced fourteen feet apart and buried sixteen inches deep to more effectively capture and divert excess water. The work will go beyond just pipe installation, also including demolition, sediment and erosion control measures, and repairs to the park's existing irrigation system. This approach is similar to successful drainage systems implemented at other city parks, such as Gadsdenboro Park, aiming to provide Daniel Island with high-quality, usable fields throughout the year. The approval of this project is part of a broader city and regional focus on managing water and improving infrastructure. Daniel Island is a key area in Charleston's Comprehensive Integrated Water Plan, which addresses flooding from stormwater runoff and rising sea levels. This park-specific project complements larger initiatives aimed at enhancing resilience across the low-lying island.
