Dovetail Launches Connector for Figma
User research platform Dovetail has released a new connector for Figma's Make plugin. The integration allows product teams to embed user quotes, feedback, and synthesized research insights directly into Figma design files, closing the gap between the research and design phases of product development.
- Dovetail was founded in 2017 by two former Atlassian employees, Benjamin Humphrey and Bradley Ayers, who aimed to address a gap they identified in the product development process. Humphrey was inspired by his experience working with researchers at Atlassian. - Figma, founded in 2012 by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace, launched publicly in 2016 with the goal of creating a collaborative, web-based design tool, contrasting with the desktop-based software that dominated the market at the time. - The connector integrates with "Figma Make," an AI-powered feature within Figma that can generate designs from text prompts and turn existing designs into interactive, coded prototypes. The Dovetail integration allows this AI to be informed by actual customer feedback and research data. - Traditionally, user research and product development have often operated in separate departments, creating information silos that can lead to a disconnect between user needs and the final product. - This integration aims to bridge the gap between the research and design phases by allowing designers to access and embed user quotes and insights without switching between applications, a common point of friction in the workflow. - The new connector is part of a broader trend of user research platforms integrating with design and development tools; for example, Dovetail also has integrations with Productboard, Jira, and Confluence, and Figma has a wide variety of third-party plugins for different functionalities. - Prior to this integration, product managers and designers would often manually synthesize research findings into reports or presentations, and then translate those insights into design requirements, a process that can be time-consuming and risks loss of context. - The ability to pull in specific quotes and highlights from Dovetail directly into Figma means that design decisions can be more easily and directly traced back to specific user feedback, enhancing evidence-based design and stakeholder communication.
