League City Appoints New Mayor Pro Tem

The League City Council has appointed Councilman Alvarez as its new Mayor Pro Tem. The move follows a vacancy on the council, and a special election has been called to fill the empty seat.

The recent vacancy on the League City Council for Position 5 arose from the resignation of Councilman Justin Hicks, which was effective March 1, 2025. His resignation followed accusations from the city's police chief that he had used his official position to try and gain access to police reports concerning emergency calls made from his residence. Prior to his resignation, the City Council had scheduled a meeting to demand Hicks step down. Fellow Council Member Chad Tressler had publicly called for Hicks' resignation, citing what he described as an "abuse of this position." Hicks resigned before the meeting took place. To fill the empty seat, a special election has been called for Saturday, May 3, 2025. The winner of this election will serve the remainder of the unexpired term for Position 5, which extends through November 2028. The period for candidates to file for the special election concluded on March 24, 2025. This is not the only recent special election for the League City Council. In January 2024, voters went to the polls to fill a vacancy for Position 4 after the previous council member resigned due to objections over a new state law requiring financial disclosures for elected officials. The role of Mayor Pro Tem, who acts as mayor in the mayor's absence, is a council appointment. While the news card mentions Councilman Alvarez, official city records currently list Sean Saunders as the Mayor Pro Tem for League City.
