Burney Falls requires weekend reservations

- California State Parks will start a pilot reservation system at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park on May 15 for Fridays, weekends, and holidays. - The park will issue 241 vehicle passes a day — 103 morning, 103 afternoon, and 35 all-day — at $10 plus fees. - The change follows years of overtourism, including trail erosion, illegal parking, and a 2024 closure of access to the falls’ base.

Burney Falls is doing something a lot of famous natural spots eventually do when popularity outruns infrastructure — it’s putting a gate in front of the crowd. Starting Friday, May 15, McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park will require advance day-use reservations on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays through Sunday, Sept. 27. Weekdays are still open without a reservation. The point is simple: too many people have been showing up at once, and the park has started to break under the strain. ### What exactly changed? California State Parks is calling this a pilot program, not a permanent rule — at least not yet. But for this summer, if you want to visit Burney Falls on a peak day, you need to book ahead instead of just driving up and hoping for parking. Reservations opened May 1, and same-day bookings are not allowed. The rule only applies during the peak season window from May 15 through Sept. 27, 2026. It also only applies on the busiest days — Friday through Sunday plus major holidays including Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Monday through Thursday stays first-come, first-served. That detail matters, because the state is clearly moving into a fully reserved park. ### How does the reservation system work? The state is breaking day-use access into time blocks, basically like timed entry at a museum but for a waterfall. There will be 103 vehicle passes for 8 a.m. to noon, another 103 for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 35 all-day passes. The listed cost is $10 per vehicle, with a small processing fee. Reservations are limited to standard passenger vehicles, not oversized rigs or tour buses. ### Why is Burney Falls doing this now? Because the old system — just let everyone come — stopped working. Burney Falls is remote, but it’s also extremely photogenic and heavily amplified by social media. The result has been the classic overtourism pileup: traffic backups on rural roads, illegal parking, long entry lines, packed restrooms, overflowing trash, and too many feet on fragile trails and vegetation. ### Was the damage really that bad? Yes. The clearest sign is what happened in 2024, when the park had to close access to the base of the falls during summer for trail restoration work. State Parks said off-trail use had gotten so intense that managers were trying to prevent a catastrophic trail failure. That’s the moment this stops sounding like a convenience. ### Who gets an exception? Overnight guests do. If you already have a campground or cabin reservation inside the park, your day-use access is included and you do not need a separate reservation. Senior and disabled discounts still apply where eligible, and annual pass holders still need a reservation even though entry benefits remain. Boats with trailers have their own rules and limited parking. ### Is this just a one-summer experiment? Officially, yes. But the catch is that pilot programs like this often become the template if they work. State Parks says it will evaluate the system after the summer and use that to plan future seasons. Basically, Burney Falls has crossed from “beautiful place with crowd problems” into “destination that needs active demand management.” ### Bottom line This is what happens when a natural landmark gets too famous for its own parking lot, trails, and roads. Burney Falls is still open, but spontaneous weekend trips are over for now. If the reservation system eases the damage and the chaos, don’t be surprised if the pilot sticks.
