Explosive 'Mud Volcano' Eruption Sparks Concern

A large and explosive 'mud volcano' has erupted, alarming local residents and scientists. While such events are not uncommon, the scale and suddenness of this eruption have raised questions about underlying geological changes. Researchers are now monitoring the area for signs of further instability and potential risks to nearby communities.

Unlike traditional volcanoes that spew molten rock, mud volcanoes erupt a slurry of fine solids, water, and gases. These materials are forced to the surface by subterranean pressure imbalances, often in areas with significant sedimentary deposits and tectonic activity. The temperature of the ejected mud is generally much lower than that of igneous volcanoes, sometimes even as low as 2°C (36°F). The primary gas released during these eruptions is methane, which constitutes about 86% of the emissions, along with smaller amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. This high concentration of flammable methane gas can lead to spectacular fireballs. A recent eruption in San Juan de Urabá, Colombia, on February 25, 2026, produced a large column of fire and smoke. While many mud volcanoes are small, some can be massive, reaching up to 700 meters in height and 10 kilometers in diameter. An eruption in Gobustan, Azerbaijan, on February 3, 2026, expelled an estimated 126,000 cubic meters of mud, covering an area of about 14 hectares. The force of such eruptions can cause significant structural damage, with the Azerbaijan event creating radial cracks stretching for kilometers. The world's most destructive mud volcano eruption began in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, in May 2006. Known as the "Lusi" mudflow, it has displaced nearly 40,000 people and buried more than 6.5 square kilometers under up to 40 meters of mud. At its peak, it spewed enough mud to fill 72 Olympic-sized swimming pools daily.
