D.J. Crowther, a Fremont native who ran for 929 yards at Dartmouth last season, has become an early focal point in South Florida’s rebuilt backfield. (gousfbulls.com) Crowther joined the University of South Florida in January 2026 after four seasons at Dartmouth, where he played 31 games and totaled 1,312 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Coach Brian Hartline said on April 17 that Crowther is “one of” the backs the staff can rely on early in spring work. (gousfbulls.com) (tampafp.com) At Dartmouth in 2025, Crowther earned first-team All-Ivy League honors after averaging 4.9 yards on 191 carries and helping the Big Green finish 7-3. Dartmouth said his 929 rushing yards ranked second in the Ivy League and seventh in program history for a season. (dartmouthsports.com 1) (dartmouthsports.com 2) South Florida is reshaping its roster quickly under Hartline, who announced on Jan. 28 that the Bulls added 41 players through the transfer portal after a 9-4 season and a third straight bowl appearance in 2025. Crowther was the lone Ivy League transfer in that group. (gousfbulls.com) (tampafp.com) That turnover has put extra value on players with college production, and Crowther arrived with both carries and classroom credentials. He completed his undergraduate degree in sociology at Dartmouth and enrolled in a master’s program in entrepreneurship at South Florida. (gousfbulls.com) (tampafp.com) Crowther told Tampa Free Press that he had West Coast options, including Eastern Washington, UC Davis and Cal Poly, before choosing South Florida. He said the move was “hard to pass up” after his visit. (tampafp.com) His biggest single-game burst last fall came against New Hampshire on Sept. 20, when Dartmouth said he rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns and added 32 receiving yards. The Ivy League named him Offensive Player of the Week two days later. (dartmouthsports.com 1) (dartmouthsports.com 2) South Florida’s 2026 roster lists Crowther as a running back wearing No. 5, placing the Fremont product in a room expected to help define the Bulls’ offense before the 2026 season. For a program cycling in dozens of newcomers, Hartline’s early spring assessment made clear Crowther is not arriving as a depth piece. (gousfbulls.com) (tampafp.com)
