Sun-Maid Taps New Licensing Agency
Sun-Maid Growers of California has appointed Earthbound Brands as its exclusive licensing agency. The partnership is aimed at strategically expanding the iconic raisin brand into new food, beverage, and lifestyle product categories.
This move builds on a long history of brand extension for the grower-owned cooperative, which was founded in 1912. Sun-Maid first formed a dedicated brand licensing unit back in 1982, leading to the creation of products like Sun-Maid Raisin Bread. More recently, Sun-Maid has partnered with companies like Flowers Foods to distribute its raisin bread to approximately 80% of the U.S. population. In 2020, the company tapped agency TreImage to expand into home decor, apparel, and toys, following a brand revamp aimed at millennial consumers. Earthbound Brands is known for translating iconic brands into broader consumer products. The agency was instrumental in the pioneering "class-to-mass" movement by developing a line for luxury designer Isaac Mizrahi with Target and has worked with major names like Hallmark, Girl Scouts, and The Pioneer Woman. The agency's work with the Girl Scouts, for example, generated over $500 million in retail sales in its first three years by extending the brand into fashion, beauty, and food collaborations beyond their famous cookies. The broader food and beverage licensing market has become one of the most dynamic sectors in retail. Valued at over $369 billion globally, the industry is seeing a major push from consumable goods to immersive, experience-driven products and lifestyle items. This trend is fueled by consumer demand for nostalgia and new ways to interact with trusted brands. For food companies, licensing offers a low-investment way to enter new supermarket aisles and retail categories, strengthening their market position.
