Codex hits 3M weekly users

OpenAI says its developer tool Codex now sees roughly 3 million weekly users, and CEO Sam Altman reset usage limits to give developers broader access as demand rose. (businesstoday.in) The milestone underlines OpenAI's short-term priority on capacity and developer access even as there’s no single public 'o3' consumer rollout announced in this batch of updates. OpenAI’s coding tool just crossed 3 million weekly users, and Sam Altman said the company reset usage limits so people who had already burned through part of their quota could start fresh again. Altman also said OpenAI plans to repeat that reset at every additional million users until Codex reaches 10 million weekly users. (businesstoday.in) That jump came fast. Codex chief Thibault Sottiaux said the tool was at 2 million weekly users less than a month earlier, which means OpenAI added roughly 1 million weekly users in under four weeks. (businesstoday.in) Codex is not just another chat box with code answers. OpenAI describes it as a software workflow inside ChatGPT and its developer tools, and the company’s March 26 release notes added a plugins directory so teams can install packaged workflows, app connections, and server setups directly inside Codex. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) OpenAI has been reshaping the business side around that demand. On April 2, the company added a new “Codex seat” for ChatGPT Business that is billed on usage instead of a fixed monthly subscription, and those seats give access to Codex without full ChatGPT workspace access. (help.openai.com) OpenAI paired that seat change with a price cut on regular ChatGPT Business seats, lowering subscription-based seats by 5 United States dollars per month. At the same time, it updated the Codex rate card to fit token-based billing, which means the more code work a team runs, the more directly the bill tracks that usage. (help.openai.com) Then came a short, sharp sales push. OpenAI’s Codex promotion says eligible Business workspaces can get 100 United States dollars in credits for each newly activated Codex seat, up to 500 United States dollars per workspace, with credits expiring on April 30, 2026. (help.openai.com) The model roadmap points the same way. OpenAI’s model release notes on March 5 said GPT-5.4 folded in the coding strengths of GPT-5.3-Codex, which suggests the company is turning coding ability into a core feature across ChatGPT, not leaving it as a side product for specialists. (help.openai.com) You can see that in the app itself. OpenAI’s March 26 ChatGPT release notes said “Codex” now appears in the horizontal bar of available experiences alongside things like Images and Apps, which means the company is surfacing it like a main tab instead of a buried developer feature. (help.openai.com) So the 3 million number is not a lonely brag about traffic. It landed in the same two-week stretch as new plugins, new business seats, promotional credits, token pricing, and a visible place for Codex inside ChatGPT, which looks less like a single product launch and more like OpenAI opening extra lanes on a highway that suddenly filled up.
