New Power Solutions for AI Data Centers

The surge in artificial intelligence is creating an unprecedented hunger for electricity. Global data center electricity consumption is projected to more than double by 2030, with AI being the biggest driver of this growth. A single AI-focused hyperscale data center can use as much power as 100,000 homes or more. This intense energy demand is straining local power grids, with data centers in some US states already consuming significant shares of the total electricity supply. The problem is compounded by the fact that AI workloads cause volatile, high-intensity spikes in power demand, unlike the more stable consumption of traditional data centers. The challenge isn't just about providing more power; it's about density and heat. Racks filled with GPUs for AI can consume up to six times more power than traditional server racks, generating immense thermal loads. This is rendering traditional air-based cooling systems inadequate and driving the need for new solutions like liquid cooling. In response, companies are developing advanced energy storage systems.
