ISRO and Smart Dragon moves

Social posts in the last two days highlighted ISRO expanding programs that involve pilots and students while also reporting China’s Smart Dragon‑3 launch, showing a flurry of mission activity across agencies. ( ) Some of those posts drew modest engagement — view counts in the feed reached up to about 69 on certain mission updates. (x.com)

India’s space agency is widening its pipeline at the same time China is adding another commercial launch, with new student programs at the Indian Space Research Organisation and a Smart Dragon‑3 liftoff on April 11. (isro.gov.in, english.cctv.com) On March 11, the Indian Space Research Organisation opened START‑2026, its fourth online Space Science and Technology Awareness Training program, with 26 lectures focused on “Observation from Space.” The agency’s student portal also lists internships, project work and other school and college programs, and a YUVIKA 2026 selection list was published this week. (isro.gov.in, isro.gov.in, isro.gov.in) YUVIKA, short for Young Scientist Programme, is a residential course for school students that the Indian Space Research Organisation says is meant to teach basic space technology, space science and applications. The agency says its 2023 edition trained about 337 students from all 28 states and 8 union territories at seven centres. (isro.gov.in, jigyasa.iirs.gov.in) India is pairing that outreach with work tied to human spaceflight. The Press Information Bureau said in May 2025 that the Gaganyaan program was targeting a crewed mission in 2027, after earlier official references had pointed to 2026, and it identified Indian Air Force test pilots as central to the astronaut effort. (pib.gov.in, pib.gov.in) A rocket is the delivery truck in this story, and Smart Dragon‑3 is China’s smaller commercial truck for satellites headed to low Earth orbit or sun‑synchronous orbit. Chinese state media said the four-stage solid-fuel rocket launched at 7:32 p.m. Beijing time from waters off Yangjiang, Guangdong, carrying a test satellite for satellite internet technology. (english.cctv.com, news.cgtn.com) Sea launch means the rocket lifts off from a mobile platform offshore instead of a fixed pad on land. Chinese outlets said the April 11 mission was conducted by the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, and industry trackers listed it as the 11th successful Smart Dragon‑3 flight. (english.cctv.com, satnews.com, spacelaunchlive.com) China has used Smart Dragon‑3 for offshore launches before. State media reported a September 24, 2024 mission from waters near Haiyang, Shandong, that placed eight satellites into orbit, and a January 13, 2025 mission from the sea near Haiyang carrying the CentiSpace 01 group. (english.www.gov.cn, english.www.gov.cn) The two updates point to different parts of the same space race. The Indian Space Research Organisation is adding more entry points for students and future crews, while China is keeping up a fast launch cadence with commercial rockets and satellite internet tests.
