CrossFit Runners Scare Diners
A viral video shows CrossFit runners sprinting past a restaurant, causing panicked diners to flee thinking there was an emergency. The hilarious mix-up perfectly captures the collision between fitness culture and everyday dining experiences.
The incident captured on CCTV took place in September 2022 at the Cervejaria Alphaiate bar and restaurant in Recife, Brazil. The video shows diners enjoying their meals outdoors at around 9:00 PM when the group of runners suddenly appears. The sudden sprint of the fitness group caused immediate panic, with customers and even staff members fleeing the scene, overturning tables and chairs in their haste. The video quickly went viral on platforms like Twitter and Reddit, gaining millions of views. Diners reportedly mistook the runners for a type of mass robbery known as an "arrastão," a crime that is common on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro where a large group of thieves runs through an area, grabbing valuables from people. One witness later explained that someone shouted "it was a robbery," which triggered the mass exodus. After the initial chaos, the runners clarified they were part of a CrossFit group, and the situation de-escalated with customers returning to their tables, some laughing at the misunderstanding. The restaurant, Cervejaria Alphaiate, later poked fun at the incident by posting a video on Instagram showing their own staff mimicking the running and the panicked reaction.
