Massachusetts Business Confidence Turns Positive

Business confidence in Massachusetts has turned positive for the first time in a year, boosted by AI advancements and strong corporate earnings.

The Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM) compiles the Business Confidence Index (BCI) monthly from a survey of over 140 employers in Massachusetts. The index is scored on a 100-point scale, where a score above 50 indicates an optimistic outlook, and below 50 indicates a pessimistic one. AI deployment, especially in large companies, is helping Massachusetts employers deal with labor supply constraints and boosting productivity. Sustained economic growth and federal tax policies are also encouraging business investment. The U.S. Index, which measures confidence in the national economy, saw the largest increase of all indices compiled by AIM, jumping 7.8 points. However, it remains in pessimistic territory with a score of 47.9. It's worth noting that the AIM survey was conducted before the recent coordinated air strikes on Iran. Continued conflict could impact energy prices, supply chains, and inflation, which could weigh on business confidence.
