BJ's Recalls Salmon Over Listeria Risk
A recall has been issued for a lot of Wellsley Farms farm-raised Atlantic salmon sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club. The recall was initiated after potential contamination with Listeria was detected, prompting regulators to advise consumers to check lot numbers.
The recall affects one specific lot of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon sold in 2-pound bags. Consumers should check for lot number 3896 and UPC code 888670025963 on the back of the package. The affected salmon was sold between January 31 and February 7, 2026. The distributor, Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. of Waltham, Massachusetts, initiated the recall after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered the potential for *Listeria monocytogenes* contamination during a random sampling. The company is investigating the source of the contamination and, as of the recall announcement, no illnesses had been reported. The recalled salmon was distributed to BJ's Wholesale Club stores in seven states: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. BJ's is directly contacting members who may have purchased the affected product. *Listeria monocytogenes* is a bacterium that can survive and grow even at refrigeration temperatures. Unlike many other bacteria, freezing does not eliminate or reduce the pathogen. Healthy individuals infected with Listeria may experience short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. However, the infection can be particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable groups. For pregnant women, a Listeria infection can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection in the newborn, even if the mother only experiences mild, flu-like symptoms. The infection, known as listeriosis, poses a serious threat to adults over 65 and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with cancer, diabetes, or HIV/AIDS. In these groups, the bacteria can spread beyond the intestines, causing a more severe, invasive illness that can lead to confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Consumers who have purchased the recalled salmon are advised not to eat it. They can contact BJ's for information on how to obtain a full refund and dispose of the product.
