OpenAI's enterprise pivot questioned
Some OpenAI investors are questioning the company's $852bn valuation as leadership shifts focus from consumer growth to enterprise customers. (reuters.com). Internally, OpenAI has touted a new alliance with Amazon while saying Microsoft had constrained its client access, and it's been rationalising product access and pricing — including documented ChatGPT model retirements and Codex pricing changes. Some OpenAI investors are questioning the company’s $852 billion valuation as it shifts from chasing consumer growth to selling more to businesses. (reuters.com) Reuters reported on April 14 that the concerns surfaced as OpenAI reorients toward enterprise customers and tries to counter Anthropic in that market. The report said the debate is coming from some of OpenAI’s own backers. (reuters.com) Inside the company, chief revenue officer Denise Dresser told staff in a Sunday memo that OpenAI’s new alliance with Amazon is a central enterprise growth driver. She also wrote that Microsoft had “limited our ability” to meet customers on Amazon Web Services’ Bedrock platform, according to CNBC’s review of the memo. (cnbc.com) Amazon disclosed in late February that it planned to invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI as part of the partnership cited in Dresser’s memo. CNBC said the message came less than two months after that announcement and framed it as part of OpenAI’s effort to reduce reliance on Microsoft. (cnbc.com) The enterprise push is also showing up in product packaging and billing. OpenAI’s help center says that, as of April 2, 2026, ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise added two seat types: a standard ChatGPT seat and a Codex-only seat under flexible pricing. (help.openai.com) OpenAI has also been narrowing which models are available in ChatGPT. Its help pages say GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, OpenAI o4-mini, and GPT-5 Instant and Thinking were retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, while API access stayed unchanged. (help.openai.com) For business, enterprise, and education customers, GPT-4o remained available inside custom GPTs until April 3, 2026, before full retirement across plans. OpenAI’s rate card and retirement notice both document that cutoff. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) Codex pricing changed on the same timeline. OpenAI says it moved Codex to token-based pricing on April 2, 2026, replacing per-message pricing for new and existing Plus, Pro, ChatGPT Business, and new ChatGPT Enterprise plans, while older Enterprise customers stayed on legacy pricing during the transition. (help.openai.com) Microsoft has not disappeared from the picture. Dresser wrote in the memo that the Microsoft partnership had been “foundational” to OpenAI’s success even as she argued it constrained enterprise reach, according to CNBC. (cnbc.com) The question for investors is whether those enterprise changes can justify a valuation set only weeks ago. OpenAI is now asking backers to judge a company with new partners, new pricing, and a narrower ChatGPT product lineup than it had at the start of 2026. (reuters.com) (help.openai.com)
