Nvidia Establishes Asia R&D Headquarters in Taipei
A public-private alliance in Taipei has secured NVIDIA's Asian R&D headquarters in a deal valued at $1.74 trillion. The new headquarters is expected to create 10,000 jobs. This major investment reinforces Taiwan's central role in the global AI chip development ecosystem.
- The new headquarters, named "Nvidia Constellation," will be located on a 3.89-hectare site in Taipei's Beitou-Shilin Technology Park. Nvidia secured a 50-year land lease from the city government, with an option for a 20-year extension. - The deal was facilitated after Taipei's government negotiated a contract termination with Shin Kong Life Insurance, which had previously won the rights to the land in 2021 but had not started development. This strategic move cleared the path for Nvidia to establish its facility in a key technology zone. - CEO Jensen Huang stated the new headquarters will house advanced research labs focusing on AI chip design, robotics, and quantum computing, establishing Taiwan as a core base for Nvidia's R&D and design operations. - A central part of the investment is the creation of an AI supercomputer, "Taipei-1," which will be a resource for Taiwanese companies, government institutions, and academia to develop applications in smart manufacturing, autonomous driving, and medical imaging. - The center is part of a broader government initiative, the "Supreme A+ Program," which provides subsidies to attract global tech firms. Nvidia's plan includes hiring for a diverse range of roles, including hardware engineers, software engineers, system architects, and AI and deep learning researchers. - The Taipei headquarters is one component of a larger "AI factory" strategy in Taiwan, involving partnerships with TSMC and Foxconn to build out the island's AI infrastructure and ecosystem. This aims to transform Taiwan from primarily a manufacturing base to a comprehensive center for AI research and development.
