Etihad to Boost Bangkok Air Freight Capacity

Etihad Airways announced it will resume A380 service to Bangkok (BKK) starting in October 2026. The move is expected to significantly increase cargo capacity on a key route to Europe ahead of the winter peak season, which could benefit exporters of high-value commodities.

- India, the world's largest rice exporter, has periodically restricted exports of non-basmati rice to control domestic prices, creating supply uncertainty and price volatility in the global market. This policy has created opportunities for other major exporters like Thailand and Vietnam to increase their market share, particularly in Asia and Africa. - Vietnam is shifting its export strategy to focus on higher-quality, high-value, and organic rice to enhance its competitiveness, particularly in demanding markets like the EU. The country aims to reduce its total export volume to around 4 million tonnes by 2030 while increasing export turnover, targeting a larger share in developed countries. - The European rice market, valued at USD 7.8 billion, is seeing growing demand for premium and specialty varieties like Jasmine and Basmati, as well as for organic and sustainably produced rice. Health-conscious consumers are driving this trend, creating opportunities for exporters who can meet stringent quality and certification standards. - The Thai Baht's strength against the US dollar has made Thai rice more expensive compared to competitors like India and Vietnam, potentially impacting export volumes. A significant price gap, even as small as $20 to $30 per ton, can lead buyers to switch suppliers in the price-sensitive global market. - European Union regulations mandate strict traceability for all imported food products, requiring operators to identify where their products came from and where they are going. This necessitates robust systems for tracking rice from the farm through processing, packaging, and distribution to ensure food safety and allow for rapid recalls if needed. - Air freight is a critical logistics option for high-value and time-sensitive agricultural products, including premium rice varietals. While more expensive than sea transport, it ensures faster delivery, reduces spoilage, and maintains quality for perishable and high-value goods destined for premium markets. - Etihad's expanded winter schedule is set to increase belly-hold cargo capacity on over 880 weekly passenger flights by October 2025, and over 1,000 weekly flights by March 2026. This increased capacity on key routes, including Bangkok, supports trade flows for industries requiring fast and reliable cargo services.
