El Gouna Egypt's Hidden Red Sea Paradise
El Gouna on Egypt's Red Sea coast is getting fresh international attention as a luxury beach destination that blends turquoise lagoons, world-class water sports, and sophisticated nightlife. The town offers everything from kitesurfing to underwater exploration with new direct flights from Europe making it more accessible. It's described as both a relaxing getaway and adventure hub with a "laid-back but sophisticated" vibe.
The resort town was conceived in 1989 by Egyptian-Montenegrin billionaire Samih Sawiris, whose company Orascom Development started with a plan to build a small marina and a few homes for friends. What began as a personal project 25 kilometers from the nearest city of Hurghada has since grown into a self-contained town with over 12,000 residents, 18 hotels, and more than 100 restaurants. El Gouna has positioned itself as a leader in sustainability, becoming the first destination in Africa and the Middle East to receive the UN-sponsored Global Green Town Award in 2014. The town is actively working with the Egyptian Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs on a strategy to become a carbon-neutral city. Its eco-friendly infrastructure includes a solar power plant, 18 water desalination plants, and a sophisticated waste management system that has recycled 80% of the town's waste since 1991. All water used for irrigating its parks and golf courses is 100% recycled water. The town's architectural identity is heavily influenced by traditional Nubian design, utilizing domes, arches, and earthy color palettes to create a cohesive aesthetic. This style is being complemented by modern landmarks like the new Gouna Conference and Culture Centre, designed by Studio Seilern Architects, which features a plaza surrounded by 20-meter-high colonnades—the tallest structures in the town. Beyond tourism, El Gouna has cultivated a significant cultural and sporting calendar. It hosts the annual El Gouna Film Festival, which has attracted international stars since 2017, alongside the El Gouna Squash Open and a Beach Polo tournament. The town continues to expand, with Orascom Development launching new high-end residential projects like North Bay and Fanadir Shores. In 2024, real estate sales in El Gouna reached $274 million, with the developer delivering 371 units and planning to hand over 410 more in 2025.
