MWC Barcelona 2026 Kicks Off

MWC Barcelona 2026 opened its doors today, gathering tech industry leaders to discuss the next phase of digital growth. The event's opening keynotes called for the industry to complete the 5G rollout, rise to the challenges of AI, and strengthen digital safety.

This year's event, themed "The IQ Era," marks a shift from AI experimentation to large-scale deployment and infrastructure. Keynotes and sessions are dominated by discussions on agentic AI, AI-powered Radio Access Networks (AI-RAN), and the move toward embedding AI across all software and operations. Samsung, for example, announced a strategy to transition its global manufacturing to 'AI-Driven Factories' by 2030. The continued rollout of 5G Advanced is a critical enabler for this next wave of AI. This upgraded network technology provides the lower latency and network slicing capabilities necessary for complex applications in industrial control and augmented reality. Consequently, on-device AI that runs locally on phones and edge devices, reducing latency and enhancing privacy, was a central theme for chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. For new ML engineers, this industry focus on production AI means portfolio projects must demonstrate deployment skills, not just model training in a notebook. Standout projects that attract recruiters include building end-to-end MLOps pipelines, deploying computer vision models to edge devices, or creating real-time fraud detection systems that handle imbalanced data. Showcasing the ability to build and maintain a complete system is now a primary hiring signal. ML system design interviews now heavily scrutinize this production-oriented mindset. Candidates are expected to lead a structured discussion moving from business problem and metric definition to data processing pipelines, model architecture, and finally, deployment and monitoring strategies. The ability to articulate trade-offs between latency, accuracy, and cost is a key differentiator. While complex algorithms are a focus, a solid grasp of core data structures and their practical application remains crucial for ML engineering interviews. Interview questions often test the combination of concepts, such as using a moving window approach with a hash map to solve a problem efficiently. A working
