Grand Canyon National Park is reopening the North Rim for the 2026 summer season on Friday, May 15, at 6 a.m., after months of fire recovery and winter assessment, the National Park Service said. The reopening restores vehicle access on Highway 67 and the park’s paved scenic roads, along with foot access on the North Kaibab Trail. The return is limited. Overnight lodging inside the park on the North Rim will not be available this season, and some visitor services remain constrained after the Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge and other structures in July 2025. ### When does the North Rim reopen, and what will be open on day one? Friday, May 15, 2026, is the reopening date the park set in a March 25 release. The National Park Service said all paved roadways within the park will reopen, including Highway 67, Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road. Those roads provide access to viewpoints including Point Imperial, Cape Royal, Roosevelt Point, Walhalla Overlook and Angels Window. (nps.gov) The North Kaibab Trail will also reopen on May 15 for foot traffic only, the park said. Stock use is suspended for the 2026 season, and trail maintenance and rehabilitation will continue through the summer, with temporary closures or delays possible. ### What will still be limited after the reopening? Overnight lodging on the North Rim inside the park will not be available during the 2026 season, the National Park Service said. (nps.gov) The agency said overflow parking near the site of the former Grand Canyon Lodge will be used because parking at the North Kaibab Trailhead will be limited to vehicles under 22 feet in length. Vehicles over 22 feet also are barred from Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads because of tight turns, narrow roadway conditions and limited parking. The North Rim Campground is not reopening immediately. The park said the campground is expected to reopen for tent and RV camping without hookups once conditions allow, and reservations will be posted on recreation.gov after an opening date is set. ### What happened in the Dragon Bravo Fire? July 13, 2025, was the date the park confirmed the loss of the Grand Canyon Lodge and numerous historic cabins in the developed area. (nps.gov) The National Park Service said extreme fire behavior the night before caused a 500-acre expansion, with sustained winds of 20 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Preliminary assessments at the time said 50 to 80 structures were lost, including administrative buildings and visitor facilities. A Burned Area Emergency Response summary published by the park said the Dragon Bravo Fire ignited on July 4, 2025, on the Kaibab Plateau within Grand Canyon National Park and adjacent Kaibab National Forest lands. The fire burned 149,399 acres, including 71,129 acres of park-managed land, according to that summary. (nps.gov) ### Why did park officials describe the 2026 reopening as adaptive? January 28, 2026, was when Grand Canyon officials said they would take an “adaptive approach” to reopening after the fire and winter weather. Superintendent Ed Keable said the park’s goal was to provide access “as quickly and responsibly as possible with an emphasis on safety,” while officials evaluated road conditions, trail damage and infrastructure readiness. (nps.gov) Park officials also told visitors earlier this year, “We will open what we can, where we can, when we can.” The agency said that approach was meant to prioritize visitor safety, resource protection and operational readiness. ### Where should visitors check before traveling? The National Park Service says reservations are not required to enter Grand Canyon National Park and the park does not use timed entry. (nps.gov) But the agency directs visitors to its North Rim status and operations pages for current closures, weather, trail conditions and service updates before making the trip. The next changes will center on campground access and in-season trail operations. The park said North Rim Campground reservations will appear on recreation.gov once an opening date is established, and the Backcountry Information Center will carry the latest closure and permit information for North Rim backcountry travel.
