GM Supports EV1 Restomod
GM may support a privately owned EV1 restoration with factory parts, potentially setting a precedent for classic EV "restomods" Whoa: It Sounds Like GM Is Actually Going To Support That Privately Owned EV1 Restoration With Factory Parts - The Autopian.
The restoration is being undertaken by collector Billy Caruso and Jared Pink of the YouTube channel Questionable Garage. Their project, dubbed "Project V212," aims to have the EV1 drivable by its 30th anniversary in November. GM is providing donor parts and engineering access to aid the restoration of this rare EV1. The automaker invited the Questionable Garage team to its Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, to pick up necessary parts. These parts were carefully disassembled from a donor EV1 by GM's design fabrication team. This particular EV1, VIN 212, is a green, first-generation model that turned up at a Georgia impound lot last year. It was the first EV1 ever to be legally sold to the public, with the winning bid exceeding $100,000. GM's support includes access to engineers and program managers who originally worked on the EV1. The Questionable Garage team had on-camera conversations with GM Heritage Center experts who walked them through vehicles that led to the EV1. GM also showed off its own EV1 project, a recommissioning of EV1 #1. The EV1's advanced braking system, which blended conventional hydraulic brakes with regenerative braking, laid the groundwork for modern EV braking systems. Today's GM EVs feature One-Pedal Driving and Regen-On-Demand, which evolved from the EV1's pioneering technology.
