Fremont to Host Holi Festival
Fremont's Festival of Globe (FOG) Holi celebration is scheduled for March 7th at Washington High School. The Festival of Colors event will run from 11 AM to 5 PM, with tickets priced at $5.
Holi is an ancient Hindu festival celebrating the arrival of spring, the triumph of good over evil, and the divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna. The festival is marked by the throwing of colored powders and water, a tradition rooted in the story of Krishna playfully coloring Radha's face. Celebrations begin the night before with Holika Dahan, where bonfires are lit to symbolize the burning away of negativity and past errors. The event's organizer, Festival of Globe (FOG), is a well-established cultural institution in Northern California. It operates under the umbrella of the Federation of Indo-Americans (FIA) of Northern California, a non-profit organization founded in 1983 to preserve and promote Indian culture and values within the growing diaspora. FOG is also known for hosting the annual Festival of India Parade and Fair in Fremont, a tradition for over 30 years that coincides with India's Independence Day and draws thousands of participants. These events, including the Holi festival, are central to the cultural life of one of the largest Indian-American communities in the United States. Fremont's celebration is one of many large-scale Holi events across the U.S., which have grown in popularity beyond the Indian diaspora. While the FOG Holi event attracts over 7,000 attendees, other notable celebrations include one in Spanish Fork, Utah, which can draw tens of thousands, and a major event at Chicago's Navy Pier. The Fremont event specifically caters to families and the local community, featuring Bollywood music from DJs, dance performances by local studios, and the use of biodegradable, skin-friendly organic colors. It reflects the significant Indian-American population in Fremont, which makes up nearly 30% of the city's residents.
