TCL Integrates 'Paper-Like' Tech with AMOLED

At MWC 2026, TCL announced it is integrating its NXTPAPER eye-care technology with AMOLED displays for the first time. The move combines the paper-like, full-color visual experience of NXTPAPER with the vibrant contrast of AMOLED. The tech will first appear in the new TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro, which is now coming to the U.S..

TCL's NXTPAPER technology, first introduced in 2021, has previously been applied to LCD screens in a range of tablets and smartphones. This hardware and software combination uses a multi-layer filter system to reduce harmful blue light and eliminate glare without the yellow tint often seen in software-based "comfort modes." The goal has been to create a full-color, full-motion display that mimics the experience of reading on paper. The shift to AMOLED is a significant evolution from the LCD-based panels used in prior NXTPAPER devices. While the LCD versions were praised for their matte, paper-like feel, they couldn't match the deep blacks and high contrast ratios inherent to AMOLED technology. The new integration promises more vibrant and accurate colors, a key advantage of self-emissive AMOLED pixels. Hands-on impressions from MWC 2026, where a concept of the technology was shown, noted a considerable improvement in color accuracy and brightness. The AMOLED version could match the maximum brightness of an older LCD model while only using about 50% of its own brightness capability. TCL is also marketing this as the first anti-glare AMOLED phone, a notable feature for a display technology that is typically glossy. The TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro features a 6.9-inch FHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, with options for up to 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. The device includes a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization and a 32MP front-facing camera. A dedicated physical switch on the phone, the NXTPAPER Key, allows users to cycle through different viewing modes. These include a standard color mode, a muted "Color Paper Mode," and two monochrome options: "Ink Paper Mode" and "Max Ink Mode," the latter of which limits apps and notifications to extend battery life and enhance focus. The phone is equipped with a 5,200mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging and has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro had a European starting price of around €339 for the 256GB model and was slated for a February 2026 release in North America and other international markets.
