"Ramageddon" Hits Tech Supply Chains
Surging demand for AI infrastructure is reportedly causing a "Ramageddon" crisis, with widespread shortages of RAM and hard drives. The supply crunch is spiking prices and delaying consumer products like the Steam Deck. This volatility is expected to increase infrastructure costs and could constrain availability for cloud-integrated services in the coming months.
The insatiable demand for AI infrastructure is causing a structural shift in the memory market. Major manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are reallocating production capacity away from conventional DRAM and NAND toward more profitable, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) essential for AI accelerators. This strategic pivot to serve data centers is creating a scarcity of the memory and storage components used in everything from PCs to consumer electronics. The numbers reflect a market in turmoil. By late 2025, DRAM prices had surged 172% year-over-year, with some DDR5 contract prices jumping as much as 100% in a single month. NAND flash has followed, with some prices climbing over 60% in a single month. Hard drive prices have also been affected, with some popular models increasing by 46% to 66% in just four months due to heavy buying from cloud providers. This component squeeze is directly impacting consumer hardware availability. Valve has warned that its Steam Deck is "intermittently" out of stock due to memory and storage shortages, and the more affordable LCD model is no longer in production. This has led to third-party markups on the popular handheld, with some units selling for over $1,000, far exceeding Valve's MSRP. The ripple effect is reaching cloud infrastructure, with server manufacturers like Dell and Lenovo implementing price increases of 15-25%. While major cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP have been quiet on their 2026 pricing, at least one provider, OVH Cloud, is forecasting a 5-10% price increase for its services, suggesting that higher costs for memory-intensive cloud workloads are inevitable.
