Deadly Confrontation in Cuban Waters
Four people were killed and several others injured after Cuban authorities intercepted a U.S.-registered boat in Cuban territorial waters. Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior reported that a Cuban border guard commander was among those injured in the confrontation. The incident is currently under investigation and complicates ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Cuba.
The speedboat involved in the deadly confrontation was reported stolen from a residence in Big Pine Key, Florida. The owner of the 24-foot Pro-Line vessel told the Monroe County Sheriff's Office he believed a former employee, who has family in Cuba, may have taken the boat. Surveillance footage from a neighbor's home captured a white truck, allegedly belonging to the former employee, arriving at the property before the boat disappeared. The Cuban government has identified all ten individuals who were on the boat as Cuban nationals residing in the United States. At least one of the deceased and one of the injured were confirmed to be U.S. citizens, with another individual holding a K-1 visa. Cuba's Interior Ministry alleged that most of the men had "a known history of criminal and violent activity" and that two were wanted for previous "acts of terrorism." According to Cuban authorities, the boat was carrying assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, bulletproof vests, and other tactical gear. They claim the individuals intended to "carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes." An eleventh person was reportedly arrested on the island, accused of being sent from the U.S. to assist the group. Both the United States and Cuba have launched their own investigations into the incident. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington will not rely solely on information provided by Havana and that the Department of Homeland Security and the Coast Guard are working to independently verify the facts. The diplomatic response from both nations has been notably cautious. Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio confirmed that communication channels with U.S. officials, including the State Department and Coast Guard, have been active since the incident was detected. He noted that U.S. authorities have expressed a "willingness to cooperate in clarifying these regrettable events." This event occurs amidst a period of heightened strain in U.S.-Cuba relations. The incident took place following a declaration of a national emergency by the U.S. President in January 2026, citing threats from Cuba, which led to significant economic sanctions.
