New Kyoto Chinese Spot: Kafuugen

A new authentic Chinese spot called "火楓源 (Kafuugen)" just opened in Kyoto's Shijo-Omiya 17. It's in pre-open until March 15 (11-14:30/17-22) near Tully's/Morita-ya 17. Expect high ceilings and a vast menu that feels like China 17.

Kafuugen's arrival adds to Kyoto's diverse culinary scene, joining establishments like Shinuchi Eitaro known for Yuzu Ramen, and various Izakayas and Yakiniku spots near Shijo Omiya station. The restaurant is located in the Shijo-Omiya area, a transport hub with the Hankyu Omiya Station and the Keifuku Arashiyama Main Line. This area offers a mix of dining options, from casual Izakayas to more established restaurants. "Kafuugen" translates to "Maple Source" or "Maple Origin," hinting at a possible theme or specialty within the restaurant. Another restaurant with the same name, 火楓源 (Kafuugen), exists near Kyoto University in the Mototanaka area, specializing in Chinese hot pot. It is unknown whether the two restaurants are related. Moritaya, a well-known beef restaurant with a Kiyamachi branch, is located nearby and has been serving Kyoto for over 150 years since 1869. They are known for using Wagyu beef from their own ranch.
