Samsung Restarts Nvidia RTX 3060 Production

Samsung Foundry has reportedly resumed production of Nvidia's older RTX 3060 GPU on its 8nm node after a two-year break. The move is apparently driven by U.S. export curbs on advanced AI chips to China, creating renewed demand for less advanced but still capable GPUs.

The entire GeForce RTX 30 "Ampere" series was originally built on a custom Samsung 8nm process, dubbed 8N, in a major manufacturing win for the Korean foundry. This collaboration began in 2020, marking a significant partnership before Nvidia shifted to TSMC's 4N node for its subsequent RTX 40 and 50 series GPUs. Reactivating this mature 8nm production line is a strategic move that avoids cannibalizing TSMC's cutting-edge capacity. With advanced nodes at TSMC fully allocated for high-margin AI accelerators and the latest consumer GPUs, using Samsung's established and cost-effective process allows Nvidia to increase gaming GPU supply without impacting its primary product roadmaps. This production restart is a direct consequence of U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors to China, which began in October 2022 and have progressively tightened. These restrictions have blocked sales of high-performance AI chips, creating a significant market in China for capable, unrestricted GPUs for both gaming and less-demanding AI tasks. The original RTX 3060, based on the GA106 GPU, launched in 2021 with 3,584 CUDA cores. It was notable for its 12GB of GDDR6 memory on a 192-bit bus, an uncommonly generous configuration for a mid-range card at the time that has helped it remain relevant. It remains unconfirmed whether Nvidia will revive the original 12GB model or a later, less potent 8GB version that used a narrower 128-bit bus. The choice will be critical to its value proposition, as many modern game titles now exceed 8GB of VRAM usage even at 1080p resolutions. While the Ampere architecture lacks features like DLSS Frame Generation found in newer cards, the RTX 3060 remains a competent 1080p performer. This revival serves as a pragmatic solution to fill supply chain gaps, particularly in markets where access to the latest technology is restricted.
