Hip-Hop Debates Heat Up

DJ Akademiks fired back at hip-hop media for using Drake solely for clicks, while debates rage over Ebro's claim that a "classic Drake album is never gonna happen." Meanwhile, rap battle polls pit Lil Baby against Lil Durk, sparking fan votes.

DJ Akademiks has recently argued that hip-hop media no longer popularizes artists but instead chases trends that are already generating clicks and revenue. He points to the coverage of the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef as a lucrative example that incentivized outlets to focus on a familiar, high-engagement narrative. This isn't a new stance for Akademiks, who has previously reflected on how his own platform's coverage of the Drake and Meek Mill beef redefined how rap confrontations were covered in real-time. The debate over Drake's discography was ignited by Ebro Darden on Apple Music's "Rap Life Review" on March 5, 2026. This is part of a long history of friction between the two; in 2023, Darden criticized Drake for not speaking on social issues affecting the Black community, and more recently called him a "sickness" in hip-hop. Following the cancellation of Darden's "Ebro in the Morning" radio show, Drake responded to the news with an axe emoji in an Instagram comment. The fan-driven polls pitting Lil Baby against Lil Durk are rooted in their frequent and successful collaborations. The two rappers have a history of working together, including on the 2021 collaborative album "The Voice of the Heroes," which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Their joint album was preceded by several popular singles together, such as "Finesse Out the Gang Way" and "3 Headed Goat," solidifying their status as a potent duo in the eyes of fans. Their respective labels, Lil Baby's 4PF and Lil Durk's OTF, have also established them as significant figures in the current rap landscape.
