Gov. Healey Seeks Tariff Refund
Governor Healey is demanding a $1,745 tariff refund for Massachusetts households to provide direct financial relief.
Healey's demand follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down Trump's tariffs from last year. The governor argues these tariffs inflicted "financial harm" on Massachusetts residents. The requested refund of $1,745 per household is based on data from the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee. This data estimates the tariffs cost American consumers that amount between February 2025 and January 2026. Healey estimates that approximately $4.886 billion is owed to Massachusetts consumers. She has formally requested Treasury Secretary Bessent to create a plan for refunding these tariff proceeds. The Supreme Court's decision that led to Healey's demand was a 6-3 ruling against the former president. It focused on presidential authority under the emergency powers law.
