Mistborn Era 3 Features Dragons
Brandon Sanderson revealed new details about Mistborn Era 3, confirming the introduction of dragons to the series. This marks a significant tonal evolution for the Mistborn universe and suggests an ambitious expansion of both scope and thematic complexity for the next phase of the Cosmere.
While dragons are new to the planet Scadrial, they are an ancient species within the broader Cosmere universe, originating on the world of Yolen. Some, like the Shard Cultivation, are even worshipped as gods on other planets. Cosmere dragons are known to be intelligent, long-lived, and capable of shapeshifting into humanoid forms. This ability means characters in previous books could have been dragons in disguise, a storytelling device Brandon Sanderson has used before. The upcoming trilogy, officially titled *Ghostbloods*, is set to jump forward in Scadrial's timeline to a 1980s-equivalent technological era. This setting will feature early computer technology and a Cold War-style spy thriller narrative. This technological leap follows the pattern of previous eras; the first trilogy had a medieval setting, while the second, *Wax and Wayne* series, took place in a steampunk and western-inspired industrial society 300 years later. The first book of Mistborn Era 3 is tentatively scheduled for release around 2028. Sanderson has stated he plans to write all three books of the trilogy before the first is published to ensure tight continuity. The final planned phase for the Mistborn saga, Era 4, is projected to be a full space-opera, further expanding the series into science fiction.
