Gemtek Unveils Wi-Fi 8 Vision at MWC 2026

At Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Gemtek unveiled its strategy for next-generation broadband centered on Wi-Fi 8. The company is positioning the new standard as a foundational technology for AI-driven, service-oriented networks. The announcement signals Gemtek's commitment to advancing intelligent connectivity.

- Gemtek's strategy involves integrating Wi-Fi 8 with other specific technologies, including Wi-Fi over mmWave (WoMT) to use the 5G FR2 spectrum for high-capacity wireless access and AI-powered routers that perform computations directly on the device to reduce latency and enhance data privacy. - The forthcoming Wi-Fi 8 standard, also known as IEEE 802.11bn, represents a strategic shift in focus from increasing theoretical speed to achieving "Ultra High Reliability" (UHR). The goal is to provide a more stable, predictable, and wire-like wireless connection, especially in crowded or interference-heavy environments. - While pre-standard prototypes were showcased at CES 2026, the final ratification of the Wi-Fi 8 standard is not expected until approximately 2028. This timeline suggests that widespread availability of certified Wi-Fi 8 devices is still a few years away. - A core feature of Wi-Fi 8 is Multi-AP Coordination, where multiple access points work together to transmit data simultaneously. This is a significant change from previous standards where access points primarily worked to avoid interfering with each other. - The integration of Artificial Intelligence is central to the new standard, enabling networks to dynamically optimize performance in real time. AI algorithms are expected to manage tasks like intelligent beamforming, dynamic channel selection, and load balancing to maintain stable connections. - Unlike previous generational leaps, Wi-Fi 8 will not offer a higher theoretical maximum data rate than Wi-Fi 7, which is approximately 46 Gbps. It will use the same 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands and 320 MHz maximum channel bandwidth. - Headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Gemtek was founded in 1988 and operates primarily as an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). This means they design and manufacture networking equipment for other global brands to sell under their own names.
