Adventure Canada Adds Svalbard Cruises
Adventure Canada announced two new eight-day expedition cruises to Svalbard in 2027, scheduled for May 18–25 and June 8–15. The Arctic expeditions will offer rare chances to experience raw beauty, wildlife, and midnight sun in one of the world's most remote polar destinations.
The newly announced "Svalbard: North to the Midnight Sun" expeditions will take place aboard the *Ocean Albatros*, an ice-class vessel designed for polar exploration. The itinerary is flexible, adapting to weather and ice conditions to maximize wildlife sightings and exploration. Travelers will fly via a charter from Oslo, Norway, to Longyearbyen, Svalbard's main settlement, to embark on the ship. The journey aims to navigate through Northwest Svalbard National Park and, conditions permitting, may reach some of the northernmost land on Earth, including the islands of Sjuøyane, roughly 1,000 kilometers from mainland Norway's Nordkapp. The timing of these cruises in late May and early June is significant. This period marks the transition into the polar summer, offering 24-hour daylight under the midnight sun, which is ideal for spotting wildlife. The sea ice is beginning to break up, granting ships access to fjords while still providing a crucial habitat for polar bears hunting for seals. Svalbard is known as the 'Wildlife Capital of the Arctic,' and with good reason. The archipelago is home to a larger population of polar bears than people, with approximately 3,000 bears in the region. Visitors also have the chance to see walruses, Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, and numerous whale species, including belugas and bowheads. The expedition also includes a visit to Ny-Ålesund, the world's northernmost permanent civilian settlement. This former mining town is now a major hub for international Arctic research, focusing on climate, ecosystems, and atmospheric studies. Pricing for this eight-day expedition starts from $7,895 per person. This cost is comparable to other Arctic expedition cruises, which can range from approximately $7,000 to over $20,000 depending on the duration and specific itinerary. The fee for the required charter flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen is an additional $1,000.
