Hyundai Inster Praised for City Use
The Hyundai Inster is earning praise as a top compact EV for city use, while the VW ID.Buzz van impressed with AWD handling in snow, ~5-second 0-60mph, minimal body roll, and family-friendly dynamics. Recommendations for daily drivers included Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD (~500+ km range), Model 3 RWD for commutes, and BMW M340i as the ideal fast, reliable daily, with new EVs like Volvo EX60, BMW iX3, and Mercedes GLC EV emerging as strong mid-size options.
The Hyundai Inster is the global designation for the electric version of the Casper, a micro-SUV that has been available with a gasoline engine in Korea since 2021. For its electric debut, Hyundai extended the vehicle's length and wheelbase to create more interior space, positioning it between A-segment city cars and B-segment compact models. Two battery options will be offered: a standard 42 kWh pack with a 95-horsepower motor and a long-range 49 kWh version with a 113-horsepower motor. The long-range model targets a WLTP range of up to 355 km (about 220 miles), and with a 120 kW DC fast charger, it can replenish its battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Inside, the Inster features a modern layout with dual 10.25-inch screens for the digital cluster and infotainment system. To maximize practicality in its compact frame, all seats, including the driver's, can be folded flat, and the rear seats can slide and recline. The Volvo EX60, set to arrive in late 2026, is an all-new midsize electric SUV built on a new platform. It's expected to offer a range of up to 400 miles and a powerful P12 AWD option producing 670 horsepower, with U.S. pricing anticipated to start around $60,000. BMW's upcoming iX3 is a significant step, being the first vehicle on its "Neue Klasse" dedicated EV platform. This next-generation SUV will feature an 800-volt system for ultra-fast charging and aims for a range of up to 500 miles with its largest battery option. The electric Mercedes mentioned, the EQC SUV, was based on the gas-powered GLC and produced from 2019 to 2023. However, Mercedes ultimately cancelled its planned launch in the United States and has since ended the model's production.
