SF Chinese New Year Parade Causes Closures

San Francisco's annual Chinese New Year Parade took place today, March 7th, leading to significant road closures and disruptions to Muni routes. The event was accompanied by a Community Street Fair in Chinatown, drawing large crowds to the area.

Dating back to the 1860s, the parade is one of the largest and oldest of its kind outside of Asia. It originated when the local Chinese community adopted the American tradition of a parade to share their culture and push back against discrimination. This year's parade celebrates the Year of the Horse and features the signature 288-foot-long Golden Dragon, "Gum Lung." It takes a team of more than 180 members from the White Crane martial arts group to carry the dragon through the streets. A new drone light show will serve as the grand finale for the 2026 parade. The display is set to feature 500 LED-lit drones creating images related to Lunar New Year traditions high above the Embarcadero. Nearly 100 groups are participating in the 1.3-mile procession, which is expected to last about two and a half hours. San Francisco native and Olympic gold medalist freestyle skier Eileen Gu is serving as this year's Grand Marshal. The accompanying Community Street Fair features over 120 booths and has drawn approximately 500,000 attendees in the past. The two-day event includes cultural performances such as Chinese opera, drumming, and folk dancing. Behind the scenes, the event's float builders have faced significant economic pressures. The cost of materials like plywood and staples has nearly doubled, an increase attributed to U.S. tariffs on imported goods. To facilitate access to the festivities, San Francisco Muni is offering free rides citywide for the entire day of the parade, though cable cars are excluded. Additionally, the Portsmouth Square Garage in Chinatown is providing one hour of free parking.
