Walmart Modernizes with 'Associate-First' Tech

Walmart is focusing its technology strategy on empowering frontline associates with AI-powered tools, wearables, and real-time data dashboards. The retailer's approach signals a broader trend where enterprise buyers expect warehouse modernization to deliver measurable gains in labor productivity and inventory accuracy, rather than just automation.

- A generative AI tool called My Assistant is available to 50,000 corporate, non-store employees through the Me@Campus app to help with tasks like summarizing documents and creative brainstorming. - For store associates, a new AI-driven task management system has reduced the time team leads spend planning overnight stocking shifts from 90 minutes down to just 30 minutes. - Walmart is combining its augmented reality tool, VizPick, with RFID technology to help associates quickly find apparel that needs to be moved from the backroom to the sales floor. The VizPick system, which allows associates to scan and identify needed inventory with their phones, has been rolled out to 4,500 stores since 2021. - A real-time translation tool is being deployed in the associate app, supporting 44 languages in both text-to-text and speech-to-speech formats to assist communication between associates and customers. This tool is enhanced with Walmart-specific terminology, like recognizing "Great Value" as a house brand. - The company is upgrading its existing conversational AI, used by over 900,000 associates weekly, with generative AI to transform lengthy process guides into simple step-by-step instructions for complex queries. - All of these new AI tools are powered by Element, Walmart's proprietary internal machine learning platform, which is designed for rapid and scalable deployment. - This technology push is part of a broader "people-led, tech-powered" strategy, which CEO Doug McMillon has championed for a decade, focusing on investments in wages, training, and benefits alongside technology. - As part of its upskilling initiatives, Walmart is piloting an AI-powered interview coach and expanding its tuition-free Associate to Technician (A2T) program to help frontline workers move into higher-paying technical roles.
