Pakistan EV sales surge 61%

Pakistan’s EV market is growing rapidly — EV sales there rose 61% year‑on‑year even as conventional vehicle demand weakened. (x.com) The jump highlights pockets of strong EV adoption outside the largest global markets. (x.com)

Pakistan’s electric-vehicle sales rose 61% in March 2026 even as sales of petrol cars, light commercial vehicles, vans and jeeps fell 9% from February. (propakistani.pk) Industry data cited by ProPakistani put March sales for cars, light commercial vehicles, vans and jeeps at 15,531 units, down from 17,121 in February. Electric-vehicle sales climbed to 53 units from 33 a month earlier. (propakistani.pk) The weakness was concentrated in passenger cars. Sales in that segment fell 12% to 11,702 units in March, including a 36% drop in 1000cc models to 294 units and an 18% drop in cars below 1000cc to 4,961 units. (propakistani.pk) Pakistan’s electric-car market is still tiny by global standards, and that is part of the point. The International Energy Agency said nearly 14 million electric cars were sold worldwide in 2023, with about 95% of those sales concentrated in China, Europe and the United States. (iea.org) Pakistan’s government has been trying to build a policy framework around that gap. On June 19, 2025, Islamabad launched its National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025–30, with a target for 30% of all new vehicles sold in the country by 2030 to be electric. (pid.gov.pk) Charging costs have also been cut. Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority approved a tariff of Rs23.57 per kilowatt-hour for electric-vehicle charging stations in May 2025, down from a previous base tariff of Rs45.55, according to local reports on the regulator’s decision. (tribune.com.pk) The obstacles have not disappeared. Business Recorder reported in May 2025 that Pakistan still lacked significant progress on charging-station buildout, even as manufacturers and consumers showed more interest in electric models. (brecorder.com) March’s sales jump does not make Pakistan a major electric-car market. It does show that even in a market where total electric-vehicle volumes are counted in dozens, policy changes and consumer demand can move faster than the rest of the showroom. (propakistani.pk)
