Wendy’s urban redesigns

- New Wendy’s outlet designs in high-crime U.S. cities now favor screen ordering and secure pickup windows, removing indoor dining. (x.com) - The changes were highlighted in cities including Oakland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. (x.com) - The design shift aims to reduce crime risk while increasing drive-thru and delivery efficiency for urban locations. ( )

Wendy’s is opening more urban restaurants built around screens, pickup windows, and delivery handoffs instead of a traditional dining room. (wendys.com) The company rolled out its “Global Next Gen” design standard in 2022 and said in August 2023 that the format adds self-order kiosks, a walk-up window, dedicated parking for delivery drivers, mobile-order pickup shelving, and a kitchen layout meant for higher-volume stores. (irwendys.com; wendys.com) Wendy’s said the redesign was built for customers who order through digital channels and the drive-thru, not just at the front counter. In first-quarter 2025 results, the chain said digital sales reached a record 20.3% of systemwide sales. (wendys.com; irwendys.com) That shift has changed what a fast-food store needs to do. Wendy’s says delivery drivers can use a separate walk-up window and dedicated parking so they do not crowd the dining room or the drive-thru line. (wendys.com; restaurantbusinessonline.com) The company is not replacing every restaurant with a no-dining-room model. Wendy’s location pages in Oakland, Seattle, and Philadelphia still list dine-in service at many existing stores, showing the company is using different formats by neighborhood and site. (locations.wendys.com; locations.wendys.com; locations.wendys.com) Wendy’s franchise materials say restaurant formats are meant to match local demand, and the company’s U.S. growth update said it opened 28 new U.S. restaurants across 18 states in 2025. That gives franchisees room to use smaller, more digital-heavy buildings where land, labor, traffic flow, or security concerns make a full dining room less practical. (wendys.com; wendys.com) The broader restaurant business has been moving the same way. Black Box Intelligence said off-premise dining remained a growth driver in late 2024, pushing chains to invest in layouts that move takeout, delivery, and drive-thru orders faster. (blackboxintelligence.com) Wendy’s has framed the redesign as a return to one of its oldest ideas. In announcing Global Next Gen, the company said founder Dave Thomas popularized the modern “pick-up window” at Wendy’s in 1970; now the chain is rebuilding stores around that same handoff point for app orders and delivery couriers.
