SoCal Under Air Quality Alert
Thousands of residents in Southern California's San Bernardino, Orange, and Riverside counties have been urged to stay indoors through Sunday. The air quality alert was issued due to high levels of atmospheric particle pollution.
The current air quality alert from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is a windblown dust advisory scheduled to last until 6 p.m. on Sunday. This advisory specifically targets the Coachella Valley and portions of San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange counties due to high levels of particle pollution. Particle pollution, the reason for the alert, consists of tiny inhalable particles known as PM10 and PM2.5. These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, leading to serious health issues such as respiratory diseases and cardiovascular problems. The current conditions are particularly hazardous for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with existing heart or lung conditions. As of Sunday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in San Bernardino was rated as "Poor," a level considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Health officials advise that when the AQI is "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups," those at risk should limit prolonged or intense outdoor activities. If conditions worsen to "Unhealthy" for all, everyone is advised to avoid extended time outdoors. This alert highlights an ongoing environmental challenge for the Inland Empire, which consistently ranks among the most polluted regions in the United States for ozone and particle pollution. The region's geography, with surrounding mountains, traps pollutants from various sources, including vehicle emissions and industrial activities. A significant contributor to the area's chronic poor air quality is the dense concentration of warehouses and the associated heavy-duty diesel truck traffic. This logistics industry, combined with emissions transported by sea breezes from Los Angeles and Orange County, creates a persistent air quality problem for the inland counties.
