PepsiCo Invests in Sustainability, Brand Experience
PepsiCo is investing £3.6 million in a rooftop solar installation at its Leicester distribution center, aiming to green its logistics. On the brand experience front, they opened their first Lay’s-themed restaurant in Madrid, using crisps as the main ingredient—a bold move into hospitality.
The Leicester solar panel array will span 160,000 sq ft and generate 2.7 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power 25% of the site's operations. PepsiCo expects to reduce its carbon footprint by 513 tonnes annually with this installation. Partnering with FlexiSolar, the project underscores PepsiCo's broader commitment to renewable energy across its UK operations. The Lay’s restaurant in Madrid, called "Lay's Barcelona Bar," is a collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Ángel León, known for his innovative seafood cuisine. The menu features dishes like crispy fried eggs with potato cream and Iberian ham and sea and mountain broth with potato noodles. This venture marks PepsiCo's first foray into a restaurant concept centered around one of its snack brands, testing the waters for experiential dining. PepsiCo has been actively pursuing sustainability initiatives, including a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. This includes transitioning to 100% renewable electricity and reducing virgin plastic use. The Lay's restaurant builds on PepsiCo's strategy of creating unique brand experiences, following similar ventures like the Pepsi General Store.
