France Deploys Aircraft Carrier to Mediterranean
France is sending an aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean to reinforce regional security. President Macron's announcement is a clear power-projection move amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, signaling France's intent to protect maritime order in the critical global chokepoint.
The aircraft carrier is the French Navy's flagship, the nuclear-powered *Charles de Gaulle*. It is the only nuclear-powered carrier in service outside of the U.S. Navy. The vessel is being rerouted from a planned NATO deployment in the North Atlantic to the Eastern Mediterranean. The *Charles de Gaulle* leads a carrier strike group, often designated Task Force 473, which includes escort frigates, a nuclear attack submarine, and a replenishment oiler. For its current deployment, the strike group includes the air defense frigates *Alsace* and *Chevalier Paul*, along with the supply ship *Jacques Chevallier*. The Italian destroyer *Andrea Doria* is also part of the task group. Its air wing can consist of up to 40 aircraft, typically including Rafale M fighter jets, E-2C Hawkeye early warning aircraft, and several helicopters. The Rafale M provides the carrier's primary strike power, while the E-2C Hawkeye significantly extends the range of the strike group's radar and command-and-control capabilities. This is not the carrier's first mission in the region. The *Charles de Gaulle* has previously been deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf to support Operation Chammal, the French contribution to the international coalition against ISIS. These deployments involved launching airstrikes and reconnaissance missions over Iraq and Syria. In addition to the carrier group, France has deployed the frigate *Languedoc* to the waters off Cyprus and is sending additional air-defense systems to the island. French Rafale jets based in the United Arab Emirates are also mobilized to protect French military facilities in the region.
