U.S. and Israel Launch Strikes on Iran

The U.S. and Israel have launched joint military strikes against Iran in an operation dubbed "Epic Fury," with explosions reported in Tehran. The move, a response to an "extremely serious" threat, sent oil prices jumping and global stock markets tumbling. Former President Trump also released a video calling on the Iranian people to "take over their government."

The military operation follows the breakdown of tense negotiations in Geneva aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear program. Just hours before the strikes, Oman's Foreign Minister, who was mediating the talks, said a "peace deal is within our reach," claiming Iran had agreed to significant concessions. However, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the talks, stating Iran was "not willing to give us what we have to have." The assault involves a significant deployment of U.S. and Israeli air and naval power that has been building in the region for weeks. The U.S. has reportedly moved over a dozen naval ships and aircraft, including F-35s, F-22s, and B-2 bombers, into the area. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that dozens of their fighter jets participated in the opening wave, targeting military industries, surface-to-surface missiles, and command centers. Iran's retaliation was swift, launching missile attacks on multiple U.S. military assets across the region. Targets included facilities in Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Shrapnel from a missile killed one person in the UAE, and Iran also appeared to target the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. The international community has responded with alarm. The European Union described the situation as "perilous," while Russia condemned the strikes as a "pre-planned and unprovoked act of armed aggression." Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested the strikes offer the Iranian people an opportunity to oust their "terrorist regime." The immediate economic fallout extends beyond oil prices, with major airlines suspending flights and significant disruptions to shipping routes expected. Analysts warn that a prolonged conflict could severely disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which about a fifth of the world's total daily oil consumption passes. This could potentially push oil prices toward $100 a barrel. While the U.S. possesses overwhelming conventional military superiority, Iran's strength lies in its asymmetric warfare capabilities and vast missile arsenal. Iran is estimated to have around 3,000 ballistic missiles and has developed a strategy of using proxy groups throughout the region to extend its reach without direct confrontation.
