Fortnite: Save the World Hits Switch 2

Fortnite’s Save the World mode is now free‑to‑play and being positioned for launch on Nintendo Switch 2, and there’s fresh speculation about free content opportunities for Switch Online users. The platform notes and the Free‑to‑Play announcement were reported alongside ongoing Switch‑2 software chatter, though Nintendo hasn’t confirmed a Direct. (techloy.com) (larazon.es)

Fortnite’s original player-versus-environment mode, Save the World, became free to play on April 16 and Epic says it is now available on Nintendo Switch 2. (fortnite.com) Epic announced the change on March 11, saying Save the World would open on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, cloud streaming and Nintendo Switch 2. The company also ran a pre-registration campaign tied to community reward milestones. (fortnite.com) By April 17, Epic’s Fortnite community page said “the day has come” and confirmed that pre-registered players would receive the unlocked rewards, while current owners would get separate in-game rewards. (fortnite.com) Save the World is the cooperative mode Fortnite launched with in 2017, before Battle Royale became the bigger business. In this mode, up to four players build forts, craft weapons and fight computer-controlled “Storm” enemies instead of 100 human opponents. (fortnite.com) The Switch 2 angle is new because Epic’s Save the World page says the mode remains unavailable on smartphones, tablets and the original Nintendo Switch. Epic’s platform note names Nintendo Switch 2 specifically as the Nintendo version that can run it. (fortnite.com) Nintendo’s own store now has a Fortnite page for Switch 2, and Nintendo UK lists Fortnite for the system with a June 5, 2025 release date for the Switch 2 version. The U.S. store page describes Fortnite broadly and does not break out Save the World in the main description. (nintendo.com) The free-content chatter around Nintendo Switch Online is looser than the Save the World launch. Nintendo’s current Switch Online pages promote classic-game libraries, GameChat on Switch 2 and member missions with Platinum Point rewards, but they do not list a Save the World giveaway or a new Fortnite entitlement for subscribers. (nintendo.com) Nintendo has run Fortnite promotions on Switch 2 before. In a June 2025 news post, the company said players who logged into Fortnite on Switch 2 by March 31, 2026 would receive the Wishing Star Emote. (nintendo.com) For longtime Save the World players, the free-to-play move also closes the old paid-access era. Epic’s support page says Starter Packs with Save the World access are no longer sold, and its 2020 development update said paid Founders had already received pack upgrades and other compensation. (epicgames.com) Nintendo has not announced a new Direct tied to this release on its main U.S. site. For now, the confirmed part is narrower: Save the World is free, Nintendo Switch 2 is on Epic’s supported-platform list, and any broader Switch Online bonus remains unannounced. (nintendo.com)
