BMW used the Beijing auto show on April 22 to unveil a reworked 2027 7 Series, making its flagship sedan the first luxury BMW to get Neue Klasse technology. (press.bmwgroup.com) BMW said the launch lineup includes two electric models, the i7 50 xDrive and i7 60 xDrive, plus the gasoline 740 and 740 xDrive. A plug-in hybrid 750e xDrive is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, followed later by a V8-powered M Performance version. (press.bmwgroup.com) The electric i7 is the headline change. BMW is advertising more than 720 kilometers, or about 447 miles, of range under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure, the European test cycle known as WLTP. (qz.com) Neue Klasse is BMW’s next wave of electric-car hardware and software, and the 7 Series is the first luxury model to borrow it before the full family spreads across the lineup. BMW said the update starts a broader rollout that will reach multiple drivetrains and market segments. (press.bmwgroup.com) BMW is also using the sedan to push a new cabin layout. The refreshed 7 Series gets BMW Panoramic iDrive, a display projected across the base of the windshield, and adds a front passenger screen while keeping the 31.3-inch rear Theater Screen. (press.bmwgroup.com) The company tied the reveal to Beijing and New York on the same day, but China is central to the timing. BMW’s 2025 annual report said China remained its largest single market even after sales there fell 12.5% from the year before. (press.bmwgroup.com) That puts the 7 Series refresh into a luxury market where German brands are defending share against faster-moving Chinese electric rivals and a weakening premium segment. CNBC reported BMW used the 7 Series launch to underscore that it is sticking with sedans even as some competitors pull back. (cnbc.com) BMW said global production starts in July 2026 at its Dingolfing plant in Germany. The company is pitching the car as both a design reset for the top end of its range and a test bed for the technology it plans to spread much more widely next. (press.bmwgroup.com)
