Sectra Buys Oxipit for AI-Powered Radiology

Swedish medical IT firm Sectra has acquired AI radiology specialist Oxipit in a strategic push into autonomous diagnostics. The deal leverages Oxipit's validated AI to automate the reading and triage of medical images, aiming to improve both workflow efficiency and patient outcomes.

The deal's financial structure involves an upfront cash payment from Sectra's own funds, supplemented by a contingent consideration based on future commercial and regulatory achievements. While specific figures have not been released, the acquisition is not projected to have a material financial impact on Sectra's sales or operating profit for the current fiscal year. Founded in 2017, the Lithuanian startup Oxipit had secured approximately $6.7 million in funding across four rounds before the acquisition. Its investor base included Practica Capital, Coinvest Capital, and Taiwania Capital, culminating in a Series A round in January 2023. A key asset in this transaction is Oxipit's ChestLink application, which holds a first-of-its-kind CE Class IIb certification for autonomous AI in chest X-ray analysis. This regulatory approval distinguishes it from most radiology AI, which typically functions as a decision support tool, by allowing it to independently report on healthy X-rays without initial radiologist review. The strategic value is rooted in workflow optimization and addressing radiologist shortages. By autonomously clearing a significant volume of normal chest X-rays, the technology enables radiologists to concentrate their efforts on cases with a higher probability of disease, thereby increasing departmental throughput and efficiency. Post-acquisition, the Oxipit team will form a specialized AI development center within Sectra's Imaging IT Solutions business area. Sectra plans to continue offering Oxipit's CE-marked solutions in Europe while pursuing regulatory approvals to expand into more markets globally. This acquisition places Sectra deeper into the high-growth AI in medical imaging market, which is projected to grow from a few billion dollars in 2025 to over $29 billion by 2032, demonstrating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 30%. Sectra has a history of expanding through strategic acquisitions to complement its organic growth. Integrating Oxipit's validated autonomous AI is expected to generate significant cost savings and productivity gains for Sectra's extensive global network of healthcare clients.
