New Open-Source Dashboard Monitors Global Geopolitics
A new open-source dashboard called "World Monitor" has launched to provide real-time geopolitical intelligence. The free tool tracks global conflicts, military assets, protests, and nuclear sites. It also provides AI-generated briefs with instability scores for different regions.
- The project was built by Elie Habib, a Lebanese engineer and entrepreneur also known for co-founding the music streaming service Anghami. The dashboard is a free and open-source project under an MIT License. - The platform is available as a web-based dashboard and as a native desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux using the Tauri framework, which allows all data processing to run locally. - Its AI-powered briefs can run on a user's local machine via Ollama or LM Studio, meaning no API keys are required and no data is sent to the cloud for analysis. - The dashboard integrates data from over 150 RSS feeds and 8 live video streams, which are displayed on an interactive 3D globe with over 35 toggleable data layers. - Key data sources for the platform include the GDELT Project for global events and tone, along with APIs from OpenSky, ACLED for conflict data, NASA, and Cloudflare Radar. - It features specialized versions for different intelligence needs: "World Monitor" for geopolitics, "Tech Monitor" for startups and cybersecurity, and "Finance Monitor" for global markets and central banks. - The system includes an anomaly detection capability that uses Welford's online algorithm to identify unusual spikes in events like internet outages, military flights, and protests against a 90-day baseline. - In addition to geopolitical events, the tool provides maritime and aviation tracking, signal intelligence with "Why It Matters" context, and monitors service status for cloud providers and AI services.
