UAE-US Mediate Major Prisoner Swap
Russia and Ukraine exchanged 600 prisoners in a major diplomatic achievement mediated by the UAE and US—the second such exchange in two days. This bolsters the UAE's rising profile as a global mediator, potentially strengthening its business climate and investor confidence.
This latest exchange is part of a larger two-day operation that saw a total of 1,000 prisoners returned home, with 200 servicemembers from each side swapped the previous day. The agreement for this large-scale release was reached during trilateral negotiations in Geneva involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this was the 20th mediation initiative it has undertaken since the beginning of the war. These efforts have now facilitated the exchange of a total of 5,955 prisoners. Abu Dhabi has increasingly become a venue for high-level discussions, having previously hosted two rounds of trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that two Ukrainian civilians were also returned in the latest swap. The released Ukrainian defenders included members of the Armed Forces, National Guard, and Border Guard Service who had been captured on various fronts, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, and Mariupol. Some of the returning troops had been in captivity since 2022. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that its returned servicemen were being transported to Belarus to undergo medical and psychological rehabilitation. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff noted the exchange was achieved through "sustained and detailed peace discussions" and that talks are ongoing, with more progress anticipated in the coming weeks.
